Modern Data Engineering: Moving Beyond Traditional ETL

The Shift from ETL to ELT

For decades, Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) was the standard for moving data. But with the rise of infinitely scalable cloud data warehouses like Snowflake and BigQuery, the paradigm has shifted to ELT (Extract, Load, Transform).

Why ELT?

Instead of relying on fragile middleware to transform data before it reaches the warehouse, ELT leverages the massive compute power of the data warehouse itself. You load raw data quickly and efficiently, and then transform it using SQL.

Enter dbt (data build tool)

dbt has revolutionized the "T" in ELT. It allows data analysts and engineers to write transformations as simple SELECT statements, while managing dependencies, testing, and documentation automatically. It treats data transformations like software engineering.

The Medallion Architecture

A modern approach popularized by Databricks is the Medallion Architecture:

  • Bronze (Raw Data): Data as it arrives from source systems.
  • Silver (Cleaned Data): Filtered, cleaned, and augmented data.
  • Gold (Business-Level Data): Highly refined data tailored for analytics and BI tools.

This layered approach ensures data quality and provides a clear lineage from raw inputs to business insights.
